Uganda Team Update #4 - June 2016

Today was simply amazing. We started the day off heading into Lagutu, the tiny village we have partnered with for many years. Pulling in we were greeted with the most joyous sight, hundreds of kids lining the roads singing us a welcome song. They had performances ready for us from kids of all ages, including a celebratory happy birthday song for Aaron and Nick, or "Baby Mickey" as they dubbed him. We also got a chance to hear an update on how well the school is doing with 17 teachers and 417 children enrolled. These kids get breakfast and lunch provided every day through this program and they have had to plant huge gardens to keep up with the demand! The ladies from our team got to join Annette, Judith, and a few other women from the village to these gardens to help them weed, while the men helped with some concrete mixing and construction projects. It was such a blessing to get to work alongside these people and experience just the tiniest bit of their day-to-day lives.

Our afternoon was spent doing the first part of the VBS program where the kids learned about David and Goliath. We also learned that some things, like "bear", don't translate too well but we did our best! We all, kids included, had a great time playing soccer, volleyball, red light green light, making musical instruments, seeing the story acted out, and much more. It was apparent how much these kids loved every second and the lessons they took away with them, knowing that "God is Bigger".

We quickly transitioned to night 1 of our 4 night crusade in a neighboring village's trade center where many of the surrounding villages come to gather. Pastor Daniel played us some amazing worship, we heard a great message from Pastor Jeff, and even got to hear from Pastor George to close out the night. Over 700 people came out and so many prayed to receive Christ that we couldn't keep count. Our team got to pray with people afterwards and none of us left without a heartwarming story of God's grace and thankfulness for getting to participate in such an event. And that was just the first night!

Today has been a long day but definitely one for the record books. Our team is wiped out but ready to rest and gear up for tomorrow! Stay tuned for more!

We Value Every "One"

An insight into the special needs ministry at Lifepoint God created all people in His perfect image and blessed each one of us with different gifts to make up the body of Christ, regardless of the degree of our limitations. Our special needs ministry was developed to lovingly welcome children with special needs, partnering with their parents so that everyone is able to experience the love of God in a relevant way. Statistics show that 80-90% of families with children with special needs are unable to attend church due to a lack of accommodations. By offering this vital ministry, Lifepoint is committed to making sure everyone is afforded this chance. We have a team of trained volunteers that are “buddies” for each child with a unique need. Each “buddy” joins the kids in their age-appropriate classroom so that they are able to play and learn with their peers, making adjustments for them as needed. If one-on-one learning is ideal, we have a safe and fun place for them within our secure children’s wing. The true heartbeat of this ministry is best expressed by the team’s leader Shayla: “Not only do we have the opportunity to share Jesus Christ with people with special needs, but we also get the opportunity to see people with special needs share Jesus Christ with others. It doesn’t get much better than that.” If you or someone you know would like more information on this ministry or how to get involved, contact caroline@lifepointnow.com.
